As I reflect on how amazing 2016 has been for me, I can’t help but think about a recent highlight of the year; when I had the pleasure of working with the beautiful and charming, Mawra Hocane. If you don’t know who Mawra is, she is the emerging talent from Pakistan, with over 1.4 million Instagram followers and has starred in internationally acclaimed movies. With big, expressive eyes and gorgeous tresses, making her look gorgeous for the red carpet was an easy task!
Mawra and an entourage of illustrious Pakistani actors and directors came to New York for Pakistan’s first ever film festival, hosted by the UN; and it was an honor to be a part of the team prepping her for the historic occasion. POPSUGAR Beauty was also there to capture the behind-the-scenes vignettes of the getting ready process for the first day, a UN-hosted inauguration dinner.
For the UN dinner, Mawra wore a gorgeous bright red angarkha and churidar from Muse Luxe, chosen by stylist, Ania Fawad. The two-piece ensemble was embellished with iridescent pearls and golden floral motifs- surely an outfit inspiration for those attending weddings this season! As this crimson dress made a fun statement, I wanted Mawra to have a ‘girl-next-door’ makeup look.
To enhance Mawra’s natural beauty, I went with subdued smoky drama on the eyelids and soft blush on her lips. To create the look, I prepped her skin with Nurturing Force-Anti Shine Primer, which not only helps keep the makeup on for hours, but has anti-aging and pore-minimizing qualities, with its vegan aloe vera gel formula.
If you thought Mawra’s skin looked flawless and air-brushed, it’s because it was! I used the Kett Cosmetics Airbrush kits as foundation and concealer and MAKE UP FOR EVER HD Powder to finish and seal the products. These products helped in perfecting her skin for a photoshopped-in-real-life look.
To amplify the dewiness in her eyes, I used MAKE UP FOR EVER’s Star Powder in Copper (#922) in the inner corners to make her eyes dazzle and to pick up some of the metallic details in her angarkha. For drama and depth, I used NARS Eyeshadow Duo in Cordura on the outer half of her eyes. For big va-va-voom lashes I finished with Maybelline’s Great Lash Mascara – which happens to be Mawra’s all time favorite!
On the second day, Mawra’s look was a departure from the traditional desi attire of the first day, as she wore a gorgeous lace top from Self Portrait. With billowy curls and long lashes, Mawra made a bold statement with her favorite sexy red lip from MAC-the iconic Ruby Woo! With a barely-there eyelid and a striking lip, Mawra’s look was modern, chic and so New York!

This year has been so exciting and I feel very lucky to have shared my journey with you all. In 2016, I hosted my second Makeup Masterclass (#KCMakeupFab4Fall!) which was an incredible experience, I traveled to beautiful Croatia, but my favorite part was that I continued to work with strong, inspiring women. 2016 has been pretty good to me, and I can’t wait to see what 2017 has in store!
